Nevertheless, what remains of Pentangle as an entity – six fearlessly inventive albums and, for the truly devoted, a string of lovingly curated youtube clips posted up your fans – bears shining testament to their colossal achievement. The music gathered on The Time Has Come doesn’t sound as good as it did back in the day – it sounds better. In a world where music fans no longer stick to what they know – where you iPod serves to show the world just how eclectic you are – Pentangle sound like they were built for these times. It was a point underscored when the group reconvened to receive a lifetime achievement gong at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in February 2007. Hearing their music in that context – as vibrant, as forward-looking, as alive with possibilities as that made by award-winners half their age – was little short of revelatory. But then, if you know Pentangle, if you’ve lived with Pentangle, you’ll know this anyway. And if you haven’t - if this is your point of entry - then welcome aboard. Everything you’ve ever loved about music is contained here.
